All flushing dog owners want our gundogs to stay well within gun range while questing for upland game. However, having a dog that will work the proper hunting pattern in all wind directions is just as important. All flushing dogs use their noses as the primary sense for locating game while hunting. Naturally, they must also have a properly developed hunting pattern that will assist them in using the wind to their advantage for locating game scent. Let’s face it; small game hunters know that it is virtually impossible to always work our dogs into the wind while searching for game. Those of us that enjoy the sporting dog games are very well aware of tests being intentionally set up to examine a dog’s bird finding ability in difficult wind direction! A good flushing dog will change his hunting pattern to properly address the wind direction using every possible advantage in locating game with his nose. (Read...) |

A few years ago I attended the Outdoor Writers Association of America’s annual conference on behalf of Nova Scotia Tourism. I had flown two of my dogs to the gathering, as I was scheduled to do some training exhibitions. The dogs performed admirably with tail wagging style, and after the event two members of the audience approached me. They complimented me on the dogs, then commented on how nice it was to see dogs trained without an electronic collar. (Read...) |

My parents took me on anti-war marches when I was an infant and I was a vegetarian for at least a month of my teens. At 17, I was carried off and booked at a non-violent protest. My liberal, peace-loving, anti-hunting, granola-snacking credentials are solid.
So now, how do I explain this to my daughter, whose comforter is stuffed with the down I harvested from 19 Canada geese in 1998? What do I say to my four-year-old son, who dutifully drags thrice-dead whole chukkar carcasses out of the freezer for Daddy to throw to the champion-bred Chocolate Lab who shares our home?

This past winter I attended a number of Sportsman Shows throughout the northeast where David Krassler (Pro Staff Advisor and Spaniel Editor for GundogsOnline.com) and I performed numerous waterdog retrieving demonstrations, showing the versatility of the English springer spaniel and Labrador Retriever. What amazed me while speaking to the average outdoorsmen was not the fact that they were unaware of a spaniel or the Labrador Retrievers’ versatility, but rather that they were unaware that there was a difference between show and field gundogs.
