The 10-Minute Retriever

How to Make an Obedient and Enthusiastic Gun Dog in 10 Minutes a Day
By John & Amy Dahl
Pub. 2001, Willow Creek Press, Minocqua, Wisc.; 254 pp., illus., index, $24.50

Here is a must-have book that ought to accompany every retriever puppy to it’s new home. Whether gun dog or field trial prospect, here is a system both amateurs and professionals can use to train hunting and competition dogs, which is arranged in simple and straightforward terms.

In fact, even pet retriever owners can benefit from the Dahls’ methods, as any responsible dog owner should be able to find ten minutes out of the day to spend with a puppy or young dog. And for the owner that wants a bit more of a biddable hunting dog or a chance to compete in hunt tests, all the information you need is contained in this well-written and researched book.

John and Amy Dahl acknowledge that there is no such thing as one training method suitable for all dogs, and guide the reader through an adaptation of their time-tested methods for different breeds and temperaments. Interspersed within the chapters are stories of real dogs they’ve owned, trained and handled over the years, including some good hunting stories that make the book easy to devour in a few evenings. Informative photos plus a glossary and index make referencing easy for the reader.

Whether your sporting library is extensive, or you’re a novice just starting out, this book belongs prominently on your shelf—or perhaps by the door, next to the dog leash and dog training dummies.

Julie Reardon, Orlean, VA
(Chesapeake Bay retriever owner 25+ years, real estate agent, equestrian journalist/photographer, competed in first hunt test last year, vows to spend 10 minutes daily teaching her young started dog to handle!)
